Delaware folklore calls him Old Bonwell — a phantom black dog said to haunt the Mid-State Road stretch of Route 12 west of Frederica, described as long and tall as a fence rail, with flaming red eyes the size of dinner plates and a great bushy tail arched over its back. The story locally attached to the dog, that an angry tenant murdered his landlord, ground the body into cornmeal, and fed it to the dog, has no historical record behind it — it fits the region's older black-dog folklore tradition rather than any documented crime. Nighttime drivers along this stretch still report a large dog with glowing red eyes at the roadside.
Route 12 is an ordinary public highway with traffic and no place to stop. The Bonwell House that the legend comes from is private property west of Frederica. Please don't linger on the road or trespass.
