Muriel's Jackson Square stands beside the square in a French Quarter building dating to the mid-1700s, which in the early 1800s was the home of the merchant Pierre Antoine Lepardi Jourdan. Legend says he lost the house in a card game in 1814 and died there, and the restaurant sets a table for his ghost each night. Upstairs, the rooms the staff call the Seance Lounge are said to be where he lingers most, with reports of cold spots, flickering lights and a man in period dress. Staff and diners also describe glasses breaking and objects shifting on their own. The restaurant embraces the story as part of its character, and the details come from its staff and local legend.
Working Creole restaurant on Jackson Square, open for dinner most days with a Saturday brunch; check the restaurant for current hours. Ask about the Seance Lounge upstairs.
