Established in 1854 and incorporating the older 9th Street Cemetery, which dates to 1828, Mount Hope Cemetery is reportedly the third-largest cemetery in Indiana, spread across roughly 200 acres with more than 81,000 burials. Its corner mausoleum, the McHale Mausoleum, carries the real inscription "Knock three times and they shall come." Visitors describe hearing horses despite no horse farms nearby for miles, and say that whistling here is sometimes answered.
Large historic city cemetery, open at all hours with office hours on weekdays. Visit in daylight and respect graves and mourners.
