The Menger Hotel, opened in 1859 beside the Alamo, is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Texas and one of the most storied. Its bar, modeled on the House of Lords pub in London, is where Theodore Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders in 1898, and Captain Richard King of the King Ranch died here in 1885. Ghost lore says dozens of spirits remain, including Sallie White, a chambermaid said to have been killed by her husband in 1876, a lady in blue and soldiers in the bar. These are repeated in San Antonio ghost tours and are not documented.
