The Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon began as a private home in 1832, became Martha Washington College for women, served as a hospital for wounded soldiers of both sides during the Civil War and has been an inn since 1935. Virginia Tourism features it in its haunted sites, and the best-known story is of Beth, a girl said to have played her violin to comfort a dying soldier, with guests still reporting violin music. A bloodstain is also said to reappear after being cleaned. Abingdon ghost walks begin nearby. These are lore.
