The Barter Theatre in Abingdon opened in 1933, when founder Robert Porterfield began accepting produce in exchange for tickets during the Depression, and it is now the State Theatre of Virginia. Staff and performers say Porterfield's ghost still watches shows from his favorite box, and Abingdon ghost walks also tell of Confederate soldiers in a tunnel beneath the theater.
Working professional theater on Main Street; check the box office for shows and the local ghost walks.
