This three-story building was built in the 1870s as a railroad hotel for travelers passing through Malvern. By the mid-twentieth century it had become a nursing home and group home, and later a care facility for people with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The state of Iowa closed it in 2005 and it was sold.
Its current owners, Josh Heard and Kurt Fricke, open it for daytime tours and overnight stays, and visiting teams, including a local group called D.A.M.M. and the crew of TLC's Paranormal Lockdown, have investigated it. Visitors and investigators report shadow figures, voices and unexplained scratch and burn marks. Many of the people who lived here were vulnerable residents, and their stay in the building was part of the town's real history, not a story. Ryan Bergara spent 24 hours alone in the building for the spinoff series Ghost Files: Alone (2024).
Open for scheduled tours and booked overnight stays; confirm availability with Malvern Manor before visiting.
