On April 24, 1908, during the Dixie tornado outbreak that struck much of the South, a violent tornado tore through Albertville. It killed 15 people, injured about 150, and destroyed roughly half the town, including much of what is now the Main Street strip, in what residents called the Great Cyclone. Business owners along the street describe a sudden, unexplained cold on summer evenings and the sound of screaming voices when the street is empty. People out late have described young children in turn-of-the-century clothes walking the sidewalks, and a barefoot boy in knickers darting laughing across the road in front of cars.
