The oldest continuously operating amusement park in the country, Lake Compounce has seen real tragedy over its long history. In 1999, 16-year-old employee Matthew Henne was killed while working the park's Tornado spinning ride; in 2001, a 23-year-old grounds worker was struck and killed by a train on the Boulder Dash roller coaster while cutting grass beneath the track, an incident that led to OSHA safety citations against the park. Staff, including overnight security who say they had no prior knowledge of the park's reputation before starting the job, report a persistent unease and unexplained sightings around the grounds, most often centered on the Star Light Ballroom.
Operating amusement park, open seasonally. The park runs a fall event on select days into November. Check the park's calendar for open dates and admission.
