The granite monument to Colonel Jonathan Buck, founder of Bucksport, stands in the town cemetery and carries a stain shaped like a woman's lower leg and foot. A well-known legend says a woman Buck condemned as a witch cursed him, vowing his grave would forever bear the mark of the woman he murdered, and that every attempt to remove the stain has failed. Historical accounts differ sharply: the monument went up decades after Buck's death in 1795, the stain appeared only as the stone weathered, and the witch story is not known in print until 1899. The Bangor Daily News has reported that the real Jonathan Buck had nothing to do with a witch trial. Visitors still come to see the mark, which is why the memorial is one of Maine's best-known curse legends.
Public town cemetery on Main Street in Bucksport, open to visitors by daylight. The monument is easy to find near the entrance; please be respectful of the graves around it.
