The Admiral Peary Inn is a seven-room bed and breakfast in an 1860s house on Elm Street in Fryeburg, once the home of Arctic explorer Admiral Robert Peary. Guests and the innkeepers describe a child's ghost they call Annabelle, a name given by a visiting psychic, who is said to laugh and dart through rooms and is blamed for odd noises, whispers and warm spots. The owners have said they can find no record of any child living or dying in the house, so her origin is a mystery. The inn is a working business, and the stories are guest and owner lore.
Working bed and breakfast open to overnight guests; reserve by phone at 207-935-1269 or through the inn's site. Ask the innkeepers about the stories.
