Aerobatics competitor and aircraft designer Kermit Weeks built his original Weeks Air Museum collection in Miami starting in 1981, only for Hurricane Andrew to virtually destroy the facility and badly damage most of its vintage aircraft in 1992. Weeks rebuilt and relocated, restoring surviving planes to flying condition and opening Fantasy of Flight in Polk City in 1995, now considered the world's largest private collection of flyable vintage aircraft. Visitors and staff report unexplained noises, sudden temperature changes, and drifting mists and shadows throughout the hangars; Florida's Apollo Paranormal Investigations rated the museum an 11 out of 10 on their own paranormal-activity scale after a series of investigations there.
Aviation museum that has reopened in a scaled-down form while its expansion is built; hours have been limited, so check fantasyofflight.com or call before driving there. Many of the former attractions are not currently available.
