Cast members at Pirates of the Caribbean have long told the story of "George," a welder said to have fallen to his death during the attraction's construction in the early 1970s, and it became mandated practice for staff to greet him each morning and bid him goodnight, with legend holding the ride will shut itself down if they forget. It's one of the most famous ghost stories in American theme parks — but Disney historian David Koenig's research for his book "Realityland" turned up no record of any construction worker dying on the attraction, making George more enduring park folklore than documented history.
The story is told about Pirates of the Caribbean, a ride inside the Magic Kingdom. It requires park admission, and the ride's backstage areas are off limits to guests.
