Jones County ran a poor farm on this land from the mid-1800s, housing people who were poor, disabled or mentally ill in exchange for work on the farm. The present building went up in 1911 or 1912 and served as the Jones County Home. A nonprofit ran it as a residential facility for people with chronic mental illness until around 2009 and 2010, when its last 36 residents were moved to a care center in Anamosa, and a land trust bought the property in 2011.
The current owners say they had no paranormal experience in mind before opening it to the public, but it has since drawn paranormal teams including the Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee and Midwest Paranormal Files, and was featured on the Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures and Destination Fear. Investigators describe a figure in white on the second-floor landing, a child's laughter on the first floor, and an entity in the basement. The people who lived and died here were real residents of a county home, and the building is worth remembering that way.
Open for scheduled weekend day tours and booked overnight stays; confirm hours and booking with Edinburgh Manor before visiting. The main building is unheated.
