Daniel Guthrie was murdered and buried in a shallow grave near the corner of Pixley Knob Road and Cemetery Hill outside Henryville; his body went undiscovered for a year before it was found, exhumed, and reburied at nearby Mt. Zion Cemetery. Charles Sweeney, an acquaintance of Guthrie's, was convicted of the murder in 1995 and sentenced to 60 years — while under investigation, he separately pleaded guilty to a federal charge for planting a pipe bomb under the car of a detective working the case. Since the early 1990s, homes in the area have reported doors opening and closing on their own, footsteps in empty hallways, footprints outside bedroom windows, and objects moving unexplained; a tape recorder left on Guthrie's gravestone reportedly captured a faint voice crying, "Help me, God help me, please help me." The cemetery carries a second, separate legend: a young woman known locally as the Green Lady, said to have died in a car accident on the same road in the early 1900s and buried here, reportedly jumps onto parked cars looking for a ride home, leaving a green residue that some say won't wash off.
Daniel Guthrie was a real young man murdered in 1991, and he is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery. Visit the cemetery respectfully in daylight. His original burial site, called Dan's Run, is on land near private property, so do not go looking for it.
