At the Curtiss Mansion, staff and visitors have long reported lights switching on and off with no explanation, along with the sound and sight of ghostly figures playing tennis and occasional screaming at night; the stories began after Curtiss died unexpectedly in 1930 and grew while the house stood abandoned for about thirty years, and the mansion has hosted ghost tours and seasonal haunted events. Aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss, who developed Hialeah, Opa-locka and Miami Springs, built this Pueblo Revival mansion on Deer Run in 1925. After his death from appendectomy complications in 1930, his widow Lena remarried business associate H. Sayre Wheeler, who served as Miami Springs mayor from 1942 to 1944 while the couple lived there into the late 1940s; the estate became the Miami Springs Villas in the 1950s and today operates as senior living.
Historic mansion run as an events venue and community space. Tours are available by reservation, and the mansion hosts public events; check curtissmansion.com for the schedule.
