Local memory holds that a girl named Matilda, roughly ten years old and the daughter of a chicken farmer who once worked this site in the early 1900s, died here of disease. Now home to the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association, the building's rotating art exhibits are said to be Matilda's favorite part: staff and visitors describe her spirit still present in the building's library, sometimes given the name Susan instead of Matilda in different tellings, and paintings hung securely one evening have been found moved or lying on the floor the next morning.
