Captain William Grant built this house in Poquetanuck Village in 1754 for his wife Mercy and their children; Grant was later lost at sea, and Mercy lived on in the house into her 80s, followed by three generations of the Grant family after her. Now a National Register-listed bed and breakfast, the inn's best-known spirit is said to be Mercy Adelaide Avery, seen in the Adelaide Room in colonial-era dress, holding the hands of two children as she waits in vain for her husband to return. The inn has been featured on HGTV, in Yankee Magazine, and on A&E's "Psychic Kids," and was the subject of a 2006 feature in The New London Day.
Operating bed and breakfast in a 1754 colonial house, open year-round to overnight guests. Book through the inn; interiors are not open for drop-in visits.
