Voluntown, Connecticut

Voluntown takes its name from land granted in 1700 to veterans of the Narragansett War, fought against the Narragansett, Mohegan, and other peoples of the region in the late 1600s. Along a bend in Breakneck Hill Road, near Pachaug State Forest, locals have long reported a tattered colonial soldier marching back and forth with a musket over his shoulder, as if still standing guard duty. Local historian David Trifilo, who documented the legend in his booklet "The Hauntings of Pachaug Forest," traced reported sightings back as far as 1742.
Public road in the Pachaug State Forest area. There is no site to enter, so view from the roadside and pull completely off the pavement if you stop. Stay out of private driveways and property.
