Benefit Street on Providence's East Side, with its row of 18th- and 19th-century houses known as the Mile of History, is the main route of Providence's haunted-history walking tours. Providence Ghost Tours leads a "Haunted Benefit Street" tour, and local lore tells of a phantom horse-drawn carriage, an old woman in an attic window and the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe, who courted the poet Sarah Helen Whitman here in 1848.
A public street open at all times; ghost tours run on a regular schedule and need tickets. Respect the people who live along it.
