Beaver Creek State Park in Columbiana County preserves stone locks and towpath from the Sandy and Beaver Canal, built in the 1830s. TourismOhio lists the park among its haunted destinations, and the best-known story belongs to Gretchen's Lock, named for a young girl said to have died there. Local telling varies: some say she drowned in the creek, others that she died of illness, and that she is a gentle presence who helps children in trouble. Hikers also tell of a lock keeper who walks the canal and a lone figure among the ruins of the vanished settlement of Spruceville.
Free state park open daily; the canal locks and Gretchen's Lock are on the hiking trails. Stay on marked trails and keep away from the creek and old stonework.
