This building opened in 1933 as Jack's Tavern and has traded under several names since, including Cooney's Tavern, the Mad Duchess, the Loose Caboose, Sparrow Hawk, and Gentleman Jim's, before becoming Ashley's in 1985. On November 21, 1934, a passerby following circling buzzards along the Indian River found the badly burned, maimed body of Ethel Allen, a regular at the tavern, identified by a distinctive thigh tattoo; her murder was never solved. Staff, guests, and at least one psychic investigator connect the restaurant's persistent paranormal activity, much of it centered on the women's restroom, to Ethel, who is said to still play harmless pranks on employees and guests.
