Guests and staff at the Ahwahnee have told of the presence of Mary Curry Tresidder, daughter of Camp Curry's founders, on the sixth floor, where she lived in a penthouse apartment and died of a heart attack on October 29, 1970; the apartment was later divided into guest rooms. On the third floor, where President John F. Kennedy asked for a rocking chair to ease his back during a 1962 stay, guests report hearing a chair rocking, although the hotel no longer has any. The Ahwahnee opened in Yosemite Valley in 1927, a granite-and-timber luxury hotel whose Great Lounge is often cited as an inspiration for the Overlook Hotel interiors in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. During a trademark dispute with a departing concessionaire it was renamed the Majestic Yosemite Hotel in 2016, and its original name was restored in 2019.
Operates as a working hotel open to guests, now under the name The Majestic Yosemite Hotel.
