The Wild Goose is said to be haunted by John Wayne: within weeks of buying the yacht, the new owner, a local attorney, reported beer glasses rattling and heavy footsteps pacing the deck when no one was aboard, saw Wayne's ghost aboard and told the National Enquirer so, and credited the activity to Wayne. A psychic who held a séance aboard in 1983 said his spirit told her it was his favourite place. The yacht began life as a Second World War U.S. Navy minesweeper, YMS-328, and John Wayne bought and refitted her in the 1960s and kept her near his Newport Beach home, cruising from Mexico to Canada with guests who included Richard Nixon, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Wayne sold her shortly before his death in 1979. The Wild Goose was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011 and has been a charter vessel for private events in Newport Harbor.
Operates as a private charter and event yacht; general public access is limited to booked charters and events.
