At the Herlong Mansion, guests and investigators describe doors, including Inez's own, opening and closing on their own, footsteps on the stairs, and a fast-moving mist seen going up and down the staircase. Built around 1845 by the Simonton family, early settlers of Micanopy, this farmhouse was transformed by 1910 into a Greek Revival mansion with grand Corinthian columns after Natalie Simonton married Zeddy Herlong. Their six children fought over ownership of the house in court for 18 years after their parents' deaths; the sister who finally won it, Inez Herlong Miller, a retired teacher and dress shop owner, died of a diabetic episode in her childhood bedroom soon after taking possession, at age 68. Sonny Howard bought the mansion in 1990 and turned it into a bed and breakfast.
