The Phelps Dodge Mining Company finished the Copper Queen in 1902 to house investors in its Bisbee copper operations, and it is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Arizona, older than statehood. Its best-known presence is Julia Lowell, a sex worker who used the third floor to meet clients and who is said to have taken her own life after a man she loved did not return her feelings; the hotel has named a third-floor room for her. Guests also describe an older man in a top hat on the fourth floor, and a young boy said to have drowned in the San Pedro River. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
The Copper Queen operates as a working hotel with a restaurant and bar open to guests and the public; ask about Rooms 315, 401, or 412 when booking.
