On August 6, 1881, an oysterman found the body of 21-year-old Jennie Cramer washed up at Savin Rock. An autopsy found she had been raped and given a lethal dose of arsenic. Three well-connected New Haven residents — Blanche Douglass, James Malley Jr., and Walter Malley — were tried for her murder in one of Victorian New England's most sensational cases; amid rumors of bribed witnesses, all three were acquitted after just an hour of jury deliberation. The case remains unsolved. Visitors to Savin Rock report a young woman in a pale dress walking the beach on foggy nights before disappearing into the mist, along with cold spots and the sound of sobbing.
Public beach, park and waterfront area in West Haven, with a boardwalk running along the shore. The old amusement park is long gone, so there is nothing marking the legend; visit as a normal beachgoer, in daylight.
