Florence Martus, daughter of an ordnance sergeant stationed at Fort Pulaski, spent 44 years greeting nearly every ship that entered or left the Port of Savannah, waving a handkerchief by day and a lantern by night; a statue of her and her dog now stands on River Street in her honor. Some say she was simply devoted to welcoming visitors to the city, while others believe she was watching for a sailor she'd fallen in love with, who never returned. The owners of a market near the statue report seeing her ghost and shadows resembling her and her dog playing across their shop's antique doors at night, along with a mournful voice repeating "Come back."
The Waving Girl statue stands at the riverfront on River Street, free and open at all times. Visit by walking along the river and take care on the cobblestones.
