Posey Chapel Cemetery, in Galena Township outside La Porte, has the reputation of being the most haunted cemetery in La Porte County, with decades of overlapping legends attached to it. The most persistent holds that the original chapel here was burned to the ground by its own reverend, with parishioners locked inside; a later chapel building on the site burned again in 1976. Visitors report a woman in white said to sing to the sound of an acoustic guitar, identified by some as Mary Goit, daughter of an early settler, along with red eyes and a reddish light moving through the surrounding woods. As with most cemetery folklore this heavily retold, much of it can't be verified — but the chapel fires and the Goit family's real burial here are documented.
Hilltop cemetery where a pavilion now stands on the site of the chapel, which burned in the 1970s. Visit in daylight and treat the graves with respect.
