At the Ma Barker house, visitors and staff describe occasionally glimpsing Ma Barker's presence on the property. FBI agents surrounded this rented house on Lake Weir on the morning of January 16, 1935, after a map found on captured gang member Arthur "Doc" Barker led them to the property. What followed was the longest shootout in FBI history: roughly four hours and somewhere between 700 and 2,000 rounds fired, ending with Kate "Ma" Barker and her son Fred both dead inside. Locals reportedly picnicked nearby to watch the gunfight unfold. The house, unpatched bullet holes and all, was relocated to Carney Island in 2016 and now operates as the Ma Barker House Museum, open for tours.
The house was moved by barge in 2016 from private lakefront land to Marion County's Carney Island Recreation and Conservation Area, where it is being restored as the Ma Barker House Museum. Tours are by appointment; contact Marion County Parks before going.
