Kelley Bean Co., founded in 1927 in Henry, Nebraska by Robert L. Kelley Sr. and Gary L. Kelley, grew into one of the largest dry edible bean processors in the country and later expanded into Rupert, where it remains a family- and employee-owned fixture of the local farming economy. Employees working in the bean sorting room across the street from the main warehouse report seeing a black figure out of the corner of their eye most nights between 7:00 and 9:30, along with a strange, felt presence. Others have reported the smell of food cooking with no kitchen or cooking source anywhere nearby.
