The Joplin Spook Light, also called the Hornet Spooklight, is a glowing orange ball seen for more than a century along a gravel road near the Missouri-Oklahoma line southwest of Joplin. Folklore offers many explanations, from a Quapaw legend of lost lovers to a miner searching for his children and a Civil War story, and the light has been featured on Unsolved Mysteries. Investigations have suggested it may be car headlights refracted across the valley, but visitors still gather at night to watch for it. Peak viewing is usually between about 10 p.m. and midnight.
A public gravel road open to visitors at night; drive slowly and stay on the road, and respect the private land and neighbors along it.
