The Hotel Vendome opened in 1917 and is still a working hotel on Prescott's Cortez Street. Its ghost story belongs to Abby Byr, said to have come west for the dry air in the hope of easing her tuberculosis, to have owned the hotel with her husband and lost it over unpaid taxes, and to have stayed on as manager in Room 16. In the telling, her husband went out for her medicine in 1921 and never returned, and she died in the room with her cat, Noble. No record of any of it has been found. Guests report soft footsteps and voices, a woman moving through the halls, and the weight of a cat settling on the bed or brushing past their legs.
The Vendome operates as a working hotel open to guests; Room 16 can be requested when booking.
