Before it became El Rayos, this building was a private home, then successively the Place on Piedmont and Rock House Grill restaurants. Local legend holds that a woman and her young daughter once lived there; after the girl was struck and killed by a car in the road outside, her mother stayed in the house until she died of old age. Restaurant staff over the years have reported cold spots, the sensation of being watched, and being locked inside the restroom by unseen hands, along with a kitchen dumbwaiter that moves on its own and phones that ring with only static on the line. Some employees say the woman's ghost has a habit of pocketing jewelry left unattended.
