Delamar was a gold town named for Captain John Delamar, who bought the claims in 1893, and reached over 3,000 residents. Silica dust from milling gave miners silicosis and killed many young, earning it the nickname Widowmaker. A 1900 fire and the sale of the mine ended the boom, and only stone ruins, mill sites and two cemeteries remain. Visitor websites repeat tales of a lady in white and phantom mill sounds, which are folklore.
BLM land with free 24-hour access via a graded dirt road; do not enter mine shafts.
