The Chicago Water Tower on North Michigan Avenue was completed in 1869 and is one of the few buildings that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Illinois tourism's haunted Chicago guide repeats the legend of a fireman who died fighting the fire and is said to still haunt the tower, with some tellings placing his ghost hanging in an upper window. Ghost tours stop at the tower. The tower is a city landmark, and the story is local legend told on tours.
City landmark you can see and walk up to on Michigan Avenue at any time of day; it is a regular stop on Chicago ghost walking tours.
