New Hightower Baptist Church, known as "Hell's Church," and the cemetery across the road are ranked among Georgia's most haunted cemeteries and have been visited by paranormal groups such as Paranormal South; local tellings add faint piano music coming from inside the church late at night, though it stands locked and unused for long stretches. The church was constituted in 1886 down a narrow road off Shoal Creek Road in north Canton, with a cemetery holding graves dating to the 18th century. Its sinister reputation grew from a widely repeated claim that a boy was found mutilated nearby in the 1980s in a cult killing, though no news record or case file supports that story. The church's real, documented history is dramatic enough: it was set on fire in 1990 by the son of a man murdered years earlier in an unrelated crime, and vandals caused roughly $100,000 in damage to the building in more recent years.
Small rural church and cemetery on Shoal Creek Road. The church was burned by vandals in 1990, and rumors of cult activity have never been proven. Visit in daylight only, and treat the graves with respect.
