The Burlington County Prison in Mount Holly, designed by Robert Mills, held prisoners from 1811 to 1965 and is now a museum and a National Historic Landmark. It saw executions and hard imprisonment, and New Jersey haunted-places lists describe disembodied screams, footsteps and objects that move on their own, with the basement and the so-called death cell the most active. A prisoner named Joel Clough, who is said to have spent his last days in chains, is the spirit most often named.
Museum run by the Burlington County Historical Society with seasonal tours and ghost events; check hours before visiting.
