Pearce Auditorium, a 700-seat opera house dedicated in 1897, is home to Brenau University's most famous ghost story: a young woman students call Agnes. Legend holds she was a dancer or ingenue denied the lead role she wanted and took her own life by hanging soon after, though no record confirms who she really was or when she died — accounts differ on whether it happened in her dorm room, at a pool diving board, or on the auditorium balcony itself. Generations of students and paranormal investigators have reported her presence on the stage and balcony, her favorite haunts.
