The Beattie Mansion, known locally as the House on the Hill, is one of St. Joseph's best-known haunted places. During renovations in 2004, workers reported disembodied voices, shadow figures and full-body apparitions, and the owner says contractors and caretakers left after hearing voices, seeing apparitions and meeting a dark, aggressive presence. House manager Mary Ann Podrasky describes footsteps, whistling, piano music and her name being called; visitors report a woman humming, strange lights and shadowy figures. A paranormal team found Eliza to be the most prominent spirit, said to roam the second floor guarding the halls, and the house was featured on Paranormal Lockdown. The Victorian residence was built for Armstrong Beattie, the city's first banker and a five-time mayor, and his wife Eliza, who both died in the house, he in 1878 and she in 1880. Visit Missouri lists it among the state's most haunted mansions, and it offers paranormal tours and overnight ghost hunts and stays.
Open for tours and paranormal events by reservation, including overnight ghost hunts; check the mansion's site for dates and prices.
