Established no later than 1844, Bachelor's Grove Cemetery takes its name from corruptions of Batchelder, a prominent local family when English homesteaders settled the area in the 1820s-40s. Abandoned around the turn of the 20th century, it's since become one of the most famous haunted sites in the country, with paranormal investigators documenting over 100 reported encounters: glowing orbs, a phantom farmhouse, phantom cars, and the ghost of a woman and child near the adjacent pond, which by the 1920s carried its own rumors as a dumping ground for mob victims. The cemetery's most iconic image is the "White Lady" or "Madonna of Bachelor's Grove" — a figure in a flowing white hooded robe, seemingly carrying a baby, captured on camera by the Ghost Research Society on August 10, 1991, seated on a tombstone and nearly transparent despite the clear photograph. Decades of vandalism and looting have left fewer than 21 markers standing today.
Cook County Forest Preserve land inside Rubio Woods. Visitors may enter only between sunrise and sunset, and the rule is enforced: people found after dark are cited or arrested. Park in the preserve lot and walk in. The cemetery has been heavily vandalized, so stay on the trail and leave everything in place.
