Amicalola takes its name from the Cherokee word for "tumbling waters," describing the 729-foot waterfall the park was built around. The Cherokee lived on and cared for this land for generations before removal in the 1830s; local history holds that one Cherokee woman refused to leave and continued living in the area until the 1850s. Staff and guests at the modern lodge, built on the mountain's crest, separately report cold spots and unexplained noises, doors that open and close on their own, and a service elevator that operates with no one inside, concentrated especially around the kitchen.
Operating state-park lodge and restaurant at the top of the falls. Rooms are for guests, and the park is open to day visitors for a parking fee. Trails near the falls are steep, so wear good shoes.
