Absecon Lighthouse, completed in 1857, is New Jersey's tallest lighthouse and was built after the wreck of the Powhatan in 1854, in which hundreds of passengers and crew died and which gave the inlet the name Graveyard Inlet. New Jersey haunted-places lists call it the state's most haunted lighthouse, and visitors tell of dimes appearing in odd places around the grounds and of other unexplained activity. Haunted tours and paranormal investigations are held at the lighthouse.
Open to the public with free parking and free admission to the Keeper's House Museum and grounds; a small fee applies to climb the tower. Check for haunted tour dates.
